SALT BATH TECHNOLOGY

Molten Salt Bath Technology is generally recognized as a superior process for heat treating a variety of metals from austempered ductile iron (ADI) to high speed tool steel and non-metals including glass, aluminum, plastic and rubber.

Characteristics such as controlability, versatility, minimal floor space, heat transfer efficiency and economy are unmatched by other processes. The new age of Salt Bath Technology combines these features with modernized equipment, automated parts handling lines and safe non-polluting chemicals.

THE BENEFITS OF MODERN SALT BATH TECHNOLOGY

1. Uniform Heat Transfer - Salt bath heat up time is four to five times faster than that of other furnaces. Uniform, rapid heating results in less part cracking and distortion, reducing scrap and secondary operations. Minimal thermal shock is encountered. The molten salt freezes on cold metal at the moment of immersion. This salt layer insulates metal parts until their temperatures exceed the melting point of the salt.

2. Safety - Modern salt baths are non-flammable, have very low volatility and are capable of being non-polluting.

3. Highly Automated - Salt bath heat treating systems can be automated to eliminate all manual handling operations, except loading and unloading. CNC controlled robotic parts handling equipment can transfer parts efficiently in high production applications improving productivity rates and lowering costs.

4. Accurate Control - Parts treated in salt baths are heated uniformly through conduction. Salt bath temperatures are accuratly maintained with a broad operating range to match the bath with the metal characteristics.

5. Versatile - Versatility can refer to the ability to partially immerse parts to achieve selective hardening. Varying time cycles may be used. Work can be immersed or withdrawn from the bath at any time.

6. Capitol Cost - High production rates, freedom from distortion or breakage and small space requirements combine to make salt bath heat treating efficient and economical. The salts themselves are not expensive and the equipment compares favorably with other types of furnaces. Highly skilled personnel are not required to operate salt bath furnaces.

7. Surface Protection - Molten salts protect metal surfaces from oxidation or scaling by excluding air during immersion. After removal from the bath, a thin film of salt remains to shield the metal.
