METALLURGICAL CONSIDERATIONS & SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS

Salt Bath Technology is the standard of industry for specific applications, including High Speed Tool Steels, Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI), Aluminum Dip Brazing, Plastics and Elastomers. Salt bath heat transfer is extremely fast and baths maintain a very high and controllable heat capacity minimizing distortion.

High Speed Tool Steel - Uniformly high hardness work is accomplished in a minimum of space with higher production rates than with any other heat treating method. Molten salts shield steel surfaces from sealing, decarburization, pitting and etching. Finish grinding requirements are minimized for some work and uniform high hardness of tool steels are obtained with a minimum of distortion or cracking.

Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) - Lower density, lower cost ductile iron is gaining in popularity throughout industry. With excellent ductility dimensional integrity and fatigue life characteristics, ADI is rapidly replacing conventional structures in many applications. Salt bath heat treating to a salt quench for this application can provide equipment cost savings and productivity improvements similar to those achieved with other metals.

Aluminum Dip Brazing - Pracise temperature control with 100% braze results are only accomplished with todays modern salt baths. Salt provides excellent fluxing action and permits brazing times far shorter than vacuum brazing. Equipment costs as in other applications, are significantly lower than competitors processes.

Plastics and Elastomers - With manufacturing trends continuing to lead toward more applications for plastics and elastomers, Salt Bath Technology plays a stronger role. Extruded rubber for automobile door moldings, windshield wiper blades and other uses can be processed in customized salt baths due to the rapid curing with precise temperature control that avoids heat distortion. Salt baths also provide a more controlled chemical reaction to create the precise internal foaming required for the molding of urethane parts.
